This rose was re-discovered by Sir Thomas Neame of Faversham, Kent. He named the rose after his wife Gwendolyn Mary (nee Thomson) (April 10, 1893 Torquay – August 16, 1973 Faversham) who is better known as the professional contralto Astra Desmond.
